5 Reasons Why The Postpartum Tummy Is Harmful To Your Overall Health

My passion in life is to help moms stay fit throughout their motherhood journey. And it’s not all about the look, even though that’s part of the reason why most moms want the mommy tummy gone.

There are so many other health reasons why the mommy tummy needs to be shrunk back down to its normal size.

Today we are going to talk about why the mommy tummy is not good for your health. Let’s dive deep into the 5 reasons why the mommy tummy is harmful to your overall health.

1. Increase Strain on Your Low Back

Having increased weight and excess fat around your midsection can cause increased back pain. The pulling that occurs from the excess body weight can misalign your spine which can lead to injury and pain.

This malalignment can also affect your pelvic alignment and your hip joints. If this pain persists for a long period of time, physical therapy will be recommended and sometimes back surgery.

2. Knee Pain Prevalence

The added weight left over from pregnancy can increase pressure on your knees causing knee pain. Knee pain is usually caused by wear and tear on your joints. This can lead to arthritis. Did you know that every 1 extra pound of weight is equivalent to 4 lbs of additional pressure on the knees?

A study published in Arthritis & Rheumatism found that losing one pound of weight resulted in four pounds of pressure being removed from the knees. That makes losing the weight worth it! Imagine losing 10 lbs. of your baby weight. That’s equivalent to relieving 40 pounds of pressure from your knees.

3. Breathing Difficulties

The excess weight and fat around the abdomen can cause increased pressure on the diaphragm and make it harder to breathe.

This pressure on the diaphragm can restrict lung expansion, which leads to breathing difficulties, especially when lying down. This can contribute to conditions like sleep apnea, which can further impact your overall health.

4. Pyschological Impact

A larger and fatter stomach can have a negative impact on self-esteem and body image, which can contribute to mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.

A lot of postpartum moms suffer from postpartum depression, but why not combat that with exercise and ultimately reduce the appearance of a mommy tummy to help improve self-esteem and confidence?

5. Increase Risk Of Chronic Disease

Excess fat, particularly abdominal fat, is associated with a higher risk of developing various chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease and hypertension.

This type of fat, known as visceral fat, can accumulate around internal organs and release harmful substances into the bloodstream, leading to inflammation and insulin resistance.
