You just had a baby, and you want to know how to lose the postpartum belly. This is something all new moms want to know because new moms like you feel like they are trapped in someone else’s body.

The pooch, the extra weight, the extra skin, it’s not what you are supposed to look like or feel like.

You just want to feel like YOU again. And it’s hard to walk around every day with this extra baggage that was left behind after pregnancy.

So you are ready to finally do something about it and learn how to get rid of the postpartum belly fat.

In this article you will learn from me, a physical therapist and mom of 4, how to safely get rid of the postpartum belly. Plus you’ll learn how long it should take to finally go away. Let’s dive in.

When does the postpartum belly go away?

According to WebMD, the postpartum belly can go away as quickly as 6 weeks or as long as 1 year.

Again, these numbers are all relative to many factors. Factors include how much weight you gained when you were pregnant, how quickly your uterus shrinks back down to normal size, how well you focus on nutrition and healthy eating, how diligent you are at sticking to a normal workout routine and also whether or not you are breastfeeding.

How do I lose postpartum belly fat quickly?

My secret formula to speed up healthy weight loss during postpartum recovery IN A SAFE WAY (again, safe is the most important word here) is to do the following FAB 5 things:

  • (1) Eat a healthy diet that is nutrient rich enough to provide for your growing baby while nursing your baby
  • (2) Breastfeed your baby for 1 year
  • (3) Work out on a consistent basis 3-5 days a week for 30 minutes without straining or overexerting yourself
  • (4) Get plenty of sleep, recommended 8 hours a day if able (I know this is hard with a new baby, so I recommend napping when able)
  • (5) Drinking 8 oz of water every day

Losing the postpartum belly fat is only one part of the equation. You also have to strengthen your core and shrink the uterus back down to its normal size.

The two ways I recommend doing this is through 1) Postpartum Belly Wraps and 2) Postpartum Ab exercises which I like to call the Dream Team.

Do Postpartum Belly Wraps Actually Work?

Are you wondering if postpartum belly wraps work at shrinking the postpartum belly and flattening the stomach?

As a physical therapist I am confident that, YES, they do.

The postpartum belly wrap is extremely effective in the earlier stages of postpartum recovery. These products assist in compressing the uterus back to its normal size.

My favorite postpartum belly wrap is from Belly Bandit. If I had to choose my absolute favorite Belly Bandit belly wrap it would be the LUXE belly wrap.

What Exercises Help Lose The Postpartum Pooch After Pregnancy?

And the most important and most effective way to lose the postpartum pooch and flatten your tummy after having a baby is through the correct series of postpartum ab exercises….postpartum exercises that target the correct muscles of your core help tighten your midsection and bring that pooch in.

Eventually as your abs get stronger, the pooch will disappear all together and you will have a flat stomach once again.

I had 4 kids and was able to get my abs back and my stomach flat again after only 10 weeks of exercise.
