5 Educational Ways To Focus On Jesus This Christmas

by Dec 14, 2018Focused Friday0 comments

Christmas is coming…it’s only a few days away! And we all know the reason for the season, right? I hope you do and more importantly, I hope your children do, too. Let’s make sure we keep our focus on Jesus Christ this Christmas.

When I was trying to come up with a topic for today’s Focused Friday, instantly the first thing that came to mind was to write about Focusing on Jesus!!!

What better topic than Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Wow, I could endlessly talk about Jesus Christ, but for today I am going to Focus on Jesus Christ in the eyes of our children.

I teach my 4 year old preschooler at home and this week’s letter of focus is “J”. The reason why we are learning about J this week is because we are learning about Jesus and the story of His birth.

Our Bible lessons chronologically follow the Bible’s stories and the curriculum aligns the story of Jesus’ birth to be taught in the month of December. I always get so excited to teach this week’s lesson since the children love to learn about the birth of our Savior (and my girls just love to talk about little babies).

So for the entire week, I teach the story of Jesus’ birth. I reteach it again and again each day throughout the week. It’s repetitive but it’s important.

I want to give your some ideas on how you can teach your children the reason for the season, and that is Jesus Christ and His birth.

5 Educational Ways To Focus On Jesus This Christmas

    1. Role Playing the Nativity Scene with a Nativity Toy set

A couple of years ago my 2nd daughter was somewhat obsessed with baby Jesus. She loved to look at Him as a little tiny baby in books, she loved to see little figurines at the store and hold little baby dolls pretending they were baby Jesus. So once I noticed how much she adored baby Jesus, I decided to buy her a toy Nativity set so she could actually play with a toy baby Jesus any time she wanted to.

Now, I know a lot of Nativity sets are fragile and rather pretty for decorations – not adequate for little children to play with, so I went online and searched for the best Nativity toy set that was most realistic to the actual Nativity scene in the Bible. I came across this one and I will have to say, this was the best gift I had ever given any of my children. It now has been the staple Christmas toy that my children get the most excited for every Christmas when I pull it out of the attic in early December.

    2. Playing a Guessing Game with the Nativity Scene

Playing a Guessing Game with the Nativity scene in which I, the teacher, take away a character from the Nativity scene while my child has her eyes closed. When my child opens her eyes, she needs to guess which person is missing from the set. This helps the child to learn all the important people who were involved in the birth of Jesus.

      3. Coloring Craft Related to The Story Of Christmas and Jesus Christ

Coloring a large printable of the letter “J” like a candy cane and learning the Candy Cane Poem which is a symbolic way to learn the importance of Jesus’ birth.

      4. Story Time that Includes Books Explaining the Real Meaning behind Christmas

Having Story Time each day reading from different Christmas books that highlight the true meaning of Christmas, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Also, an even better way to teach the story of Christmas is by opening up your Bible!

      5. Sing Along Christmas Songs

Sing Along with Christmas songs relevant to Jesus birthday such as “Away in a Manger,” “We Three Kings,” and “Silent Night.” Click on the videos to watch with your kids and learn the lyrics.

With the many creative ways to learn about Jesus, your child will surely come out of the week fully grasping the importance of why we celebrate Christmas.

I encourage you to focus your eyes and heart on Jesus Christ this holiday season! Teach your children why we give gifts, why we go to church, why we sing these Christmas songs, what the holiday is really about.

Try not to lead them into the false assumption that Christmas is about being entitled to expensive gifts under the tree and lazy days around the house since school is out for Christmas break.

I hope to encourage you to teach your children that this is a time of giving and rejoicing in the birth of a baby who became our Savior – the best gift we will ever receive.

What are your favorite ways to teach your little children about the true meaning of Christmas? How do you focus your attention on Jesus during this time of year? I would love to hear from you. Comment below with your thoughts!
