As a stay at home mom looking to get back into shape, are you finding it hard to even find time to even get into your workout clothes? You are determined to lose the baby weight and get back into your skinny jeans from before conception. You think about working out all the time, but your baby interrupts you from even starting because he’s either hungry or he had a blow out.

Getting Started

Getting started is half the battle. I know, I’ve been there, and am still there. I’m a mom of 4 little girls, current ages 7, 5, 3 and 1.5 years old.  Even though I’m out of the newborn stage, I definitely have my hands full. I have come to the realization as a mom that sometimes workouts have to be cut short, sometimes workouts may be skipped and sometimes workouts are not really going to make me sweat at all. But that’s ok.

As a mom of a newborn or a mom of 4, any kind of workout is better than no workout, whatever that workout may be. I think the most important thing is that you, as a busy mom, make a lifestyle change, a change that is consistent, with an end goal in mind and with the idea that you are ok with whatever you get accomplished today. Just be proud that you tried.

Take Baby Steps

You’ve heard of baby steps I’m sure. Well, what better example to use than to use the “baby steps” example (because you probably have a baby strapped on you every step you take, right?)

Anyways, in order to get consistent with a workout routine, you need to take baby steps and build upon the first baby step. Don’t set yourself up for failure by doing a 1 hour Insanity workout your first day you were given the green light to work out after your 6 week postpartum check-up. No!

Take it slow and start small. Start with a 5 min workout, then a 10 min workout for a few weeks, and then build upon that: 15, 20, 25, 30 and so on.

Every 2-3 weeks do a bit more.  Add 5 minutes to the previous workout. You’ll start to get into a rhythm. It will feel more natural. Like brushing your teeth every morning when you wake up and every night before going to bed. You can’t skip that part of your routine because it’s just so natural and automatic and feels weird otherwise.

Make Your Workouts A Habit

Your workouts will begin to feel like that. You develop a routine and your body is expecting you to stick to the routine. When you miss the workout, you’ll really miss it – like you have an attachment to it.

It is just like someone who wakes up in the morning and needs their cup of coffee to start the day. You just can’t miss that morning jolt. If you did, well, uh, let’s just not go there. You’re probably thinking, there’s no way I would ever forget or ever deliberately skip my coffee in the morning.

Well, I hope that someday you can say the same about your workouts.

I hope that someday you have finished checking off your workout calendar every day that you had scheduled it into your routine and say “I never want to miss my workout ever again” (even with a little baby running around or a bunch of little kids screaming your name).

You are determined to put Mommy first. Put your health first, set it as a priority because Mommy’s health is more important than your child’s health.

Why?

Because without you, your baby would not be able to be cared for and would not be able to thrive without you.

Take care of your body, and you’ll also take care of your mind.

Exercise is known to help fight depression by releasing endorphins (the happy hormone).

Take care of your body, and you’ll have that jolt of energy even without the coffee.

Take care of your body and your body will be able to carry your baby for many years to come, pain free and all.

Take care of your body now so you can ultimately live a long life watching your child grow up, and hopefully watching your grandchildren and great grandchildren grow up too.

The Best Gift You Can Give Yourself

The best gift you can give yourself is self care; start by instilling a lifelong fitness routine into your daily routine now and forever! Amen to that!
